These paired organs perform vital and complex functions for the body’s homeostasis: they filter blood by removing metabolic waste and excess water (producing urine), regulate hydro-electrolytic and acid-base balance, contribute to blood pressure control (through the renin-angiotensin system), and produce essential hormones such as erythropoietin (for red blood cell production) and the active form of vitamin D (for bone health).
